Finding whether a Restaurant is Any Good from a Review

September 24, 2011
Whether it is about taking a special someone for a dinner date or taking your business associates for a lunch, finding the right place to dine at is an important factor. How do you choose a restaurant for a special occasion? Suppose you have a place in mind, but have no idea whether it is any good. How do you decide whether to go there?
In such a circumstance, many rely on restaurant reviews to help find a solution. How do you know that you can rely on a particular review? Keep in mind the following, and you may be able to understand all these.
Find reviews that focus on all the important points. Does the review cover every important facet of the restaurant? This would include the location, ambience, seating arrangement, noise level, food and drinks, service, and price. Also, make sure it is from someone who has actually visited the restaurant.
Find reviews that have an opinion. Make sure the review has an honest opinion regarding a restaurant based on the points. If a certain point was bad, it should not mar the whole account. A review of a restaurant that is otherwise a great place to dine at apart from a grumpy waiter, must mention this in clear terms.
Find reviews that mention the reason for the opinion. Vivid descriptions work well when it comes to a restaurant review. However, what works better is a review that specifies the reason for admiring or criticizing a certain point. A good review would state the reason, e.g. slow, instead of saying that the service was bad.
The most important thing is – whose review do you regard as more important – a diner’s or a critic’s? If it is a celebrity food critic, and the restaurant is aware of him/her, they would get a much better service. This is the reason it is better to rely on reviews from diners and critics who do the job undetected.
Lastly, the most important thing to understand is that a dining experience is very much a subjective one. Whether you like it or not depends on your personal tastes and interests, and not on any other individual’s review. All that a review can do is help you get a sneak peek into what the experience is like.
